Travis AFB Heritage Musuem

It’s been over 39 years since I last visited this museum, despite spending a lot of my time in USA less than an hour away.

Being fortunate enough to hold Legally Permanent Resident (‘Green Card’) status meant that I did not have to go through the foreign visitor processes beforehand, so I was able to select a fine weather day for my visit. Entry is via the Visitor Centre just outside the main gate, where you register for the museum and they check your credentials before calling for a museum van to pick you up – very different from when I was last there when all you had to do was go to the main gate and they would direct you to the museum, allowing you to drive yourself on base!

The museum has grown since I was last there and on the day that I visited was relatively quiet. It’s always worth calling beforehand to make sure they are open, as they run on a volunteer basis.

As ever with US museums, there can be awkward aircraft positioning for photography but nonetheless its a really worthwhile place to visit. The volunteers are only too eager to tell you about the exhibits and also helpful when it comes to a couple of their aircraft which are on base but not at the museum site (the C-54 and C-141)
