Greece Independence Day 2025

Held on March 25th each year to celebrate the Greek Revolution of 1821, Greece has a parade which takes place in Athens, comprising of military and government personnel and equipment.

I was fortunate enough to be in Greece in 2025, whilst visiting the Low Flying training area in advance of the Exercise Iniochos 2025 held at Andravida Air Base, so along with many other enthusiasts, we made the trip back to Athens to witness the flypasts.

A popular location to view the flypasts is Mount Lycabettus, which provides a viewpoint looking across the city, enabling the aircraft to be captured with the Acropolis and other Athens buildings in the background – almost a low flying area of it’s own!!

The flypast comes through twice, so if you don’t get the shot you were hoping for there’s always a second chance – unfortunately the weather doesn’t always play ball and this year there was quite a lot of cloud.

Pretty much at least one of every type in the Air Force, Navy, Army, Police, Medical and Civil Defence units participated this year, including a rarely seen Lockheed P3 Orion – it’s my understanding that there are just 2 or 3 airworthy examples still operating with the Greek Navy.
